Ethical Issues

Keyword: Animal Welfare(AW)

According to World Organisation for Animal Health(WOAH), **animal welfare** means **‘the physical and mental state of an animal in relation to the conditions in which it lives and dies.’** They work on the welfare of animals*.* There are five Freedoms which describe society’s expectations for the conditions animals should experience when under human control.

The Five Freedoms

  1. Freedom from hunger, malnutrition and thirst
  2. Freedom from fear and distress
  3. Freedom from heat stress or physical discomfort
  4. Freedom from pain, injury and disease
  5. Freedom to express normal patterns of behavior

According to the concept of AW, it needs to take great care not to harm the health of the animal. Speaking of our idea, we are concerned about the effects of administering the MOF robot on the health of cows. For example, there is a risk that MOF may be absorbed through the digestive wall and accumulate in the body, or that MOF itself may be degraded in the digestive system of a cattle, causing harm to it. However, we believe that this risk can be avoided by designing in the way we ds described in 0. Methane Recovery System Requirements from Biological Perspectives.

Legal Issues

For instance, Japan has the following laws regarding livestock production

*** Act on Safety Assurance and Quality Improvement of Feed ***

This Law concerns safety assurance and quality improvement of feed, commonly known as the "Feed Safety Law".

The law regulates the notification of feed manufacturers, etc., labeling of raw materials, ingredient standards, and production methods to ensure the safety of feed and feed additives, which are production materials for livestock products, so that antimicrobial substances added to feed do not remain in livestock products and feed is not contaminated by harmful substances such as pesticides, mold toxins, heavy metals, or pathogenic microorganisms. The law mainly requires feed manufacturers to comply with these regulations.

It is necessary to show that the actual administration of our robot mixed with the sample will not affect the growth process of cattle, as there will be no residues in the milk or beef.

Social Issues

In our system, MOF can be recycled, so there is no waste by using this robot. Moreover, since the methane released into the atmosphere is basically harmful to humans, there should be no social problems caused by the robot's methane recovery.
